Preparing for Plastic Surgery: Tips from a Plastic Surgeon

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

If you are considering plastic surgery, it is essential to prepare yourself physically and mentally for the procedure. As a plastic surgeon in Memphis, Tennessee, I often discuss the following important points with my patients before surgery to ensure a safe and successful outcome.

  1. Avoid anything that can thin your blood

One of the most significant risks during surgery is excessive bleeding. Therefore, it is crucial to stop taking anything that can thin your blood for two weeks before surgery. This includes all aspirin products, such as Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Bayer, and other painkillers. Instead, you can take Tylenol as it does not thin the blood. Additionally, you should avoid any vitamins that contain Vitamin E, as it is a known blood thinner. You should also discontinue any herbal supplements or products, including ginkgo biloba, St John's Wort, metabolite, CoQ10, fish oil, and green tea, unless prescribed by a doctor. Red wine, in particular, should be avoided, as it thins the blood, while white wine, beer, and cocktails are fine.

  1. Consult with your primary care physician

If you are over 65 to 70 and are planning to have major surgery, it is recommended to have a pre-op consultation with your primary care physician. This is to ensure that you are physically ready for the surgery, especially if it involves a long operating time. During this consultation, your physician may conduct a physical exam and evaluate your medical history to identify any underlying health issues that could affect your surgery's outcome.

  1. Understand your recovery time

While the surgery itself may only take a few hours, the recovery process can take several weeks. Depending on the extent of the surgery, you may need up to 1 to 3/4 weeks before you are ready to return to work. It is crucial to plan ahead for this recovery time, so you have adequate support and time to rest and heal. You should also discuss post-operative care with your surgeon to ensure that you understand how to care for yourself after the procedure.

In conclusion, preparing for plastic surgery requires careful planning and preparation. By following these tips and having a thorough pre-operative discussion with your surgeon, you can minimize the risk of complications and increase your chances of a successful outcome. Remember, plastic surgery is a significant decision, so take the time to understand the risks and benefits before making a final decision.
